Abstract: Kenya suffers a negative image with regard to its commitment in the fight against corruption. The change in political leadership in Kenya in 2003 on an anti-corruption platform provided the context for this study. This study set out to establish the images of corruption as framed by Kenya’s two main dailies from 2003 to 2008. The researcher carried out a content analysis of the newspapers over the six-year period and found that corruption issues were largely unfavourably framed. It also established the presence of politics, public services, police, socio-economic, legal, regional/ethnic and civil society frames among others. The results suggest that the media is not giving corruption issues adequate attention. This is seen in the relatively few editorials and front page appearances and that most of the corruption stories were placed in the inside pages of the newspapers. Further, the private sector was framed unfavourably, while police, Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission, and legal sector were favourably framed. However, editorials were largely unfavourable in respect of nearly all the frames. Another key result of this study was that the media view on the framing of regional/ethnic corruption was unfavourable. Abstract: The researcher aimed at finding out the impact of rehabilitation measures on: reduction of criminal activities, promotion of vocational education and reduction of risky behaviours associated with youth who consume alcohol and other drugs. A sample size of 220 respondents was chosen randomly through convenience sampling technique. The study adopted descriptive research design and data was collected using self-administered questionnaires. The data was analysed using descriptive statistics. The study found out that rehabilitation measures lead to minimization of criminal activities among the youth while at the same time equipping them with skills to change their criminal behavior. Further, rehabilitation measures impacted positively on vocational education and employment related skills among the youth. Rehabilitation measures further led to reduction of drug related risks facing the youth such as health problems, infectious diseases, violence, and vandalism. The researcher recommended to the NACADA to implement projects that engaged the youth. Further, it was recommended that NACADA in collaboration with the Kenya Police needed to enhance their efforts in ensuring that the law was adhered to by all citizens. This is because the youth involved themselves in the use of drugs at the tender age of ten years, yet, rules restricted sale of alcohol and other drugs to youth under 18 years of age. Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of SMS slang on students’ written academic communication with a specific focus on Daystar University undergraduate students. The objectives of the study were to: establish the frequency of SMS slang use among undergraduate students, find out the SMS slang styles of communication among undergraduate students and evaluate the effect of SMS slang use on written academic communication among the undergraduate students. An explanatory sequential research design was used and both quantitative and qualitative data methods were used. Stratified random and purposive sampling techniques were used in selecting a sample size of 103 respondents. Data analysis was done using SPSS to obtain descriptive statistics such as frequency, means and percentages. Data was presented in form of tables and charts based on the research objectives. From the research findings, text messaging among the target population was the preferred mode of communication because they frequently engaged in texting which was a key element in their social lives. Findings further indicated that the undergraduate students frequently used truncation, initialization/abbreviation/acronyms, vowel deletion, non-conventional spelling, and code mixing as SMS slang styles. The study concluded that use of SMS texting had negative influence on the written language skills of Daystar University undergraduate students and the influence occurs in their spelling and punctuation. Further, use of SMS slangs contributed to poor academic performance in students’ written academic communication skills as it encourages abbreviations and non-conformity with English grammatical rules. The study recommends that students should adhere to the practice of using correct grammatical conventions when writing their instant messages to achieve competence in written academic communication. Abstract: Strategic planning is a term that has gained popularity in the recent past in both public and private sector organizations in Kenya. Historically, the practice had been linked to military operations and the plans they made to attack their opponents. Most organizations that practice strategic planning do it with an aim to achieve a sustainable competitive advantage, which will lead to profitability in the long run. The process of strategic planning as agreed by various authors can be summarized as follows: Environmental assessment, Strategy formulation, Strategy implementation and Strategy evaluation and control. This study aimed to establish if the staff at Car and General are involved in the strategic planning process and the impact on performance. A descriptive research design was used. Data collection was done using questionnaires and interviews. The data was then analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences, and presented using graphs, tables and pie charts. The research findings indicated that majority of the staff at Car and General Limited were not involved in the strategic planning process. The process was a preserve for senior managers only. Various solutions were provided to the challenges facing staff involvement in strategic planning at Car and General. The key recommendations were that: The management at Car and General should adopt a participative approach to strategic planning that will ensure that all staff are involved in the process, the staff views should be welcomed and should be incorporated in the strategic plans and finally, the management of Car and General Limited should ensure that there is regular communication to all the stakeholders throughout the strategic planning process. The resulting information will aid the management of Car and General Limited to improve on their strategic planning process and staff involvement in order to achieve optimal performance. Abstract: Strategic management process (SMP) is an area to reckon in strategy formulation, implementation and key decision-making in the organization pegged on environmental scanning on the competitive forces in the petroleum industry and the energy sector could be magnanimous based on its benefits. The use of SMP requires a critical analysis in unveiling better ways of harnessing its benefits in leveraging the strength of the competitive forces and establishing competitive advantage over the competitors of Vivo Energy. However, this may be dependent on factors such as the level of engagement of SMP, allocation of resources to promote strategic management process, establishment of a proactive culture that inculcates strategic management process and successful implementation of the strategies and critical decisions arrived at through the SMP. It is on this light that this study analyses the impact of strategic management process on the performance of Kenya based petroleum companies: a case of vivo energy. By conducting a census on the managers and supervisors of Vivo Energy headquarter in Nairobi, and three research questions, the study employed descriptive survey design and utilized questionnaires to collect data which was analyzed both descriptively and inferentially. The findings showed that the exclusion of SMP is a recipe for failure in critical and comprehensive analysis of the industry competitive forces, efficiency and effectiveness with dire performance-related consequences. Based on the findings, the study concluded that SMP should be the foundation and core of companies in the petroleum industry and energy sector in particular. The study recommends that Vivo Energy and stakeholders in the entire energy sector must align resources towards the development of strategic management process for higher efficiency and effectiveness in decision making. Abstract: The purpose of this study was to interrogate radio talk show content, particularly the concern of whether the presenters adhered to professional standards as outlined in the code of conduct for practice of journalism in Kenya. Its objectives were to examine how radio talk show presenters handled content against the MCK’s laid down professional and ethical standards, determine whether gaps existed in Kenyan journalism training that were filled by other professionals, and explore audience preferences that influenced the nature of radio talk show content in Kenya. Descriptive research design was used and the target population of the study was ten leading FM radio stations in Nairobi that aired morning talk shows. Purposive sampling technique was used to select a sample of three FM radio stations. Structured in-depth interviews were used in data collection, and data analysis was done using SPSS software version 20. Findings of the study revealed that the regulatory bodies such as the MCK and the Communication Authority of Kenya were leading efforts to regulate content in the interests of decency. The limitations of the MCK as a media regulatory body were lack of capacity to monitor radio stations, resulting in poor enforcement of the journalists’ code of ethics. It lacked the capacity to ensure that only trained radio broadcast journalists were hired by media houses. Although the MCK had developed a curriculum for middle level journalism training institutions, its impact in standardising training had been negligible. This study did not assess the efficacy of the CA’s programming code as it was launched in July 2016, after the conclusion of the fieldwork for this research. Among the recommendations of the study were improvement of the journalism curriculum as well as embracing of the MCK curriculum by middle level colleges. Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the implications of secession on regional stability and nation-building of seceded states, with reference to South Sudan. South Sudan gained her independence in 2011 after decades of protracted conflicts but plunged into yet another civil conflict that derailed all the quests for prosperity and development. The objectives for this study were to examine the role played by regional states in the secession process of South Sudan, evaluate the effects of secession of South Sudan on regional stability, and to analyze the social, economic, and political challenges of nation-building in South Sudan. The study used a combination of quantitative and qualitative research tools for collection of data. Primary data was extracted through interviews. Secondary data was obtained from review and analysis of journals, books, papers, peace agreements and other available literature on the implications of secession, regional stability, and conflict resolution. The study found out that the secession of South Sudan had multiple effects on the regional states, resulting to a web of insecurities in the East African region, threatening stability of the region as whole. Further, the independence of South Sudan did not ultimately resolve the political, economic, and social grievances that the southerners had against the successive Khartoum regimes. Nation-building in the new independent state is marred by several challenges. The study recommends that, although secession terminates continued series of conflicts, it should only be considered if both parties to the secession have the capabilities to ensure the delivery of statehood responsibilities to their citizens and neighboring communities. future studies need to explore the relationship between religion and ethnicity, and their implications on security in post-secession states, in the case of South Sudan. Abstract: This study sought to find out whether inflation affected the performance of Barclays Bank Zimbabwe in terms of financial performance, lending practices, recruitment practices and compensation for its staff. The objectives of this study included: finding out how inflation affects Barclays Bank Zimbabwe’s performance; assessing the impact of inflation on the recruitment and compensation practices of Barclays Bank Zimbabwe and ascertaining how inflation affects Barclays Bank Zimbabwe’s lending practices. The study was a case study and used questionnaires, interviews and content analysis to gather data. A sample size of 45 was selected using quota sampling and the response rate for the questionnaires was 68.2% and for the interviews, the response rate was 85.71%. Data was analysed using SPSS and Microsoft office excel. Pearson’s correlation coefficient was used determine the relationship between two variables that is inflation and salaries. Coefficient of determination was also used to establish the ration of explained variation to total variation. The study findings were presented in form of tables and figures and found out that inflation affected BBZ performance. As part of the findings, the study found out that the recruitment practices were affected by inflation as well as compensation for BBZ employees. Though the bank had access to a pool of vast talents, this was at a higher cost and as inflation increased, so did the salaries and wages of the employees. The variations observed between the salaries offered at BBZ and inflation were 99% caused by variations in inflation rates and 1% was caused by other factors. Lending rates were also affected by inflation since the bank itself did not have the money to continue lending and customers could not afford to take loans due to the high lending rates imposed by the bank. Hyperinflation also led to decreased financial performance for the bank due to the constant increases in salaries and wages, decreased investment, reduced lending, increased recruitment costs and a poor operating environment in the country. Abstract: Health messages emphasize either on potential losses or gains associated with the behaviour being advocated. Demographic factors are possible reference points when assessing such messages, partly explaining possibilities of discrepancies in perceptions and subsequent health behaviour. The degree to which a message is persuasive can be measured through change in perceptions and behaviour. Guided by Prospect Theory and Precaution Adoption Process Model, this study sought to investigate the influence that breast cancer messages have had on women’s perceptions and subsequent health behaviour. The research assumed both qualitative and quantitative research designs. An open ended questionnaire was the principal data collection tool administered to 403 women participants aged between 20 and 64 years. Findings revealed that (a) television, radio and health facility personnel were the most preferred sources of information; (b) breast cancer messages are framed in three ways - gain, loss and mixed framing; (c) message frames largely elicit desired effects on perceptions and subsequent health behaviour; (d) information deficiencies in deed is also worrying factor that need to be addressed accordingly. Consequently, It is prudent for the women to voluntarily seek the right breast cancer information, if they are to move from intention stage to maintenance stage of the Precaution Adoption Process Model. In addition, risk communicators need to develop breast cancer frames that revolve around symptoms and causes accordingly, if voluntariness amongst women in taking up non-risky behaviour is to be witnessed. The risk communicators could use the most preferred channels side by side to reinforce strengths associated with each when communicating to the women. Internet and television (especially among the rural women) are of low use, calling for the Government and other development partners, including the women to boost the level of their usage. Abstract: This study was meant to assess the effectiveness of breastfeeding campaigns on working mothers among school teachers in Embakasi, Nairobi County. The study is aimed at fulfilling these objectives, to find out the influence of breastfeeding campaigns on working mothers, to find out the extent of awareness, to find out the challenges on breastfeeding and the influence of breastfeeding campaigns on behavioral and social norms change on the working mother. The study used descriptive survey design and involved 60 respondents between the ages of 25-35 drawn from 10 schools in Embakasi region. Questionnaires were used to collect data. The study findings were analyzed using SPSS. The study revealed that, current breastfeeding rates were below the goals of World Health Organization initiatives. The study revealed that only 72.2% of the 54 sampled respondents had heard or seen materials or campaigns on breast feeding. It also revealed that Antenatal clinics remain the most influential form of information supply with 61.9% citing it as the most reliable as opposed to electronic media that had 48.1%. Majority 53.7% however, have not participated in any seminar or discussions related to breastfeeding. The studies revealed that, majority of the mothers were aware of the existence on breastfeeding campaigns in Embakasi. The most common campaigns had been tailor made to suit the needs of the breastfeeding mothers. Work related challenges were the most common reasons for denying exclusive breastfeeding. However, majority of the women had been positively influenced by some campaigns on their attitude and behavior towards breastfeeding. This recommends that breastfeeding campaigns should be more active especially the ones in the antenatal clinics, the campaigns should be integrate social media as an influential tool and also use other media such as radio since the majority of the Kenyans are in the local regions where radio is the main media of communication. The study further recommends the use of mobile phones to reach every Kenyan since majority of the Kenyans own mobile phones. The study consequently would be useful to the government and other organizations involved in design and initiation of breastfeeding campaigns. Finally, the study would also benefit other researchers and students who are interested in further studying the area. Abstract: Resource mobilization and effective communication strategy go hand in hand in any non-profit organization. This study sought to find out whether communication strategy has influence on resource mobilization results. The study focused on non-profit organizations and used Fellowship of Christian Unions (FOCUS Kenya) as a case. FOCUS Kenya is a non-profit Christian organization whose main mandate is to reach students on campus through evangelism, leadership development, discipleship and integral missions and social transformation programs. The study reviewed the level of funding at FOCUS Kenya from 2006 to 2016, to determine the relationship between corporate strategy and the level of funding at FOCUS Kenya and also the perception of stakeholders on the effectiveness of communication strategies in resource mobilization as established by FOCUS Kenya. This study was guided by the stakeholder theory that focuses on relationships between an organization and stakeholders’ influence on how the organization conducts its activities (Freeman, 2010). The research used descriptive design using both qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection. Data was collected using questionnaires and interviews and analysed using Statistical Package of Social Science (SPSS) for the questionnaires, and thematic discussions for the interviews. The findings indicated that in 2016, FOCUS Kenya level of funding was at Ksh 32M, which was four times lower than expected needs despite the efforts employed to mobilize adequate resources. Additionally, the findings revealed that FOCUS staff members were not involved in the formulation and implementation of the communication strategy. The study recommends that stakeholders be involved in formulation and implementation of communication strategy for a greater, resource mobilization success. Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate how corporate culture maintenance influences customer satisfaction at New Kenya Cooperative Creameries (New KCC). The study objectives were to establish the nature of corporate culture maintenance, determine the extent of customer satisfaction, establish relationship between customer satisfaction and maintenance of a corporate culture, and determine other factors that influence customer satisfaction in New KCC. The study applied the descriptive research survey design with a target population of 1200 customers and 75 managers based at the head office. The study collected both qualitative and quantitative data through a questionnaire. The qualitative data was analysed using translation and thematic analysis, while the quantitative data was analysed using descriptive statistics. The average mean score of corporate culture maintenance at New KCC was established to be 3.50 and 3.29 according to the managerial and customer respondents, respectively, implying a moderate extent. Overall, on customer satisfaction, 35% of the respondents indicated a large extent, 30% a small extent, 25% a very small extent, while only 10% stated a large extent. The findings of the regression analysis further revealed a coefficient of determination R square of 0.554, which implies that 55.4% of changes in the customer satisfaction are explained by the studied factors. The study also found out other six factors that influence customer satisfaction, namely previous experience, complaint handling, employee attitude, personal needs, marketing communications, and level of the involvement in the purchase. One of the study’s recommendations is that organizations need to strengthen the set of principles governing their corporate cultures. Further studies can be conducted investigating the challenges affecting corporate culture maintenance as well as other factors affecting the satisfaction of customers. Abstract: The principal purpose for the formation of Daystar University as viewed in the eyes of the university founders is clearly articulated in the vision and the mission of the university. It is therefore in the interest of the university founders and other stakeholders to know whether the university is keeping within the parameters of the original purpose for which it was formed. Moreover, as a chartered private university in Kenya, the Commission for Higher Education requires Daystar University to establish a follow-up mechanism to ascertain that they are meeting the goals and the objectives for which the university was formed. Being a mission-driven non-profit organization, Daystar University is faced with the challenge of measuring the success of the university mission and vision which is difficult to measure compared to profitability. However, with the use of quetionnaires, useful data was collected among the university graduates to measure the success of the mission and vision which seek to impart servant and transformational leadership virtues. The data collected shows that the university mission and vision influenced the graduates’ ethical conduct with the academic staff being more effective in passing the mission and vision to the student than the non-academic staff. The findings of the research revealed that a considerable majority at 78% of the respondents had the university mission and vision statements made clear to them. Further, it was noted that while all the diploma respondents understood these statements, only 43% of the masters students understood them. Daystar University alumni were influenced by the mission and vision to be more caring, honest, respectful, just and even empathetic in life owing to the servant and transformational leadership values inculcated in them through the university mission and vision Description: Thesis URI: http://repository.daystar.ac.ke/xmlui/handle/123456789/3221 Files in this item: 1
